What Should We Know About History Textbooks in 2023? Why is there intense scrutiny on the content and methods of high school history textbooks?
History teaching has traditionally held a strong position in continental education models, including the Hungarian system. The practice of writing textbooks to support learning and the use of various approaches have long-standing traditions in Hungary. Even in the third decade of the new millennium, the content of textbooks still predominantly shapes the structure of school history lessons. Due to their frequent use, textbooks can significantly influence students’ historical awareness, thinking, and knowledge.
One of the key reasons for the general interest in textbooks is that they crystallize content regulation. This includes the curriculum-mandated contents, specified competencies, and tasks.

Digital textbooks, online resources, and interactive learning platforms are increasingly being integrated into education systems worldwide. While printed textbooks continue to be widely used, the shift towards digital tools is gaining momentum, suggesting that the future of education might see a more balanced use of both traditional and modern resources.
